Street Repairs In Coalinga

We received a Letter To The Editor, and published it last week. This week, there is a response from Councilman Nathan Vosburg, District 3.

Dear Editor:
The other day, I drove to Sacramento Street where I lived as a kid in the 50s and took time to go down Warthan, Houston, Pleasant, and Valley Streets also to look for the houses of friends I knew in those days. I began to wonder when that area was built as I observed the condition of the streets.

The streets are in appalling shape, and even the street markers are in sore need of replacing. I know there are many hard-working families living there, as there was when I was young. Is this a forgotten part of Coalinga? Which councilperson represents this area now?

I also know that there are many areas of Coalinga that need upkeep, but surely the city would benefit by installing curbs and gutters, resurfacing the streets, and if nothing else installing new street signs in this precious neighborhood.

Dear Sonja, Although council members are elected by district, each one can address problems in ANY and ALL areas of Coalinga. The council member from this district, though, is Nathan Vosburg. You might also contact the staff at City Hall: 935-1533 – Editor

Response From Councilman Vosburg

My name is Nathan Vosburg and I am the current City Council representative for District three. I am writing in response to last week’s letter to the editor concerning Sacramento and Warthan streets, I agree those streets are appalling and as they sit in the heart of my district I have been fighting to get them fixed. I wanted to reach out and inform the public that the City has been working on repairs for streets, gutters, and improving ADA access city-wide. This is a long process that involves design, funding, and implementation.

Information on these  projects can be found on the city website www.coalinga.com, Facebook pages, Newspaper, City Council Agendas, and reaching out to City Staff or Elected Officials directly.

Birch and Durian Project

Another project the City is working on is was approved at the May 2nd 2024 meeting and surrounds fixing Birch and Durian Streets. The information surrounding that is as follows:

During the course of the recent storms, portions of Durian Street and Birch Street have in a state of major disrepair beyond the scope of crack sealing and slurry seal. In order to avoid increased cost to rehabilitate, staff is recommending addressing this area during the dry season before next winter.

This project will implement street improvements to East Birch Avenue between 5th Street / Coalinga Plaza and North 4th Street, and East Birch Avenue between 5th Street / Coalinga Plaza and Sunset Street, and West Durian Avenue between North Sunset Street to North 7th Street. It will encompass 1.5” cold milling of the existing asphalt concrete on Birch and Durian Avenues with new 1.5” asphalt concrete overlay and removal of one existing concrete valley gutter on both Birch and Durian with new concrete valley gutter and new subbase. No utilities were found and there will be no improvements to existing curb, gutters, and ramps. Existing Striping will be removed and improved by the City of Coalinga Public Works Department.
